Autumn invites us to breathe deeper and activate the Lungs to build strength for the fall and winter seasons.

A moment of clarity for autumn mornings: let breath, movement, and herbal care build your body's natural defenses.

As the leaves begin to fall and the air grows crisp, we find ourselves in a season of transition. In Chinese medicine, autumn belongs to the Lung—an organ of breath, boundary, and vitality. Just as the trees release their leaves, nature reminds us that exhalation is just as essential as inhalation. This isn’t a time of decline—it’s a time to fortify.

The Lungs are our first line of defense, both physically and energetically. They govern Wei Qi, the body’s protective energy that keeps us resilient through seasonal shifts. When the Lungs are strong, we breathe deeply, speak clearly, and meet the world with strength and steadiness.

This month, let’s explore how to strengthen the Lungs and build daily rituals that support immunity, vitality, and breath.

🌬️ The Lung in Chinese Medicine: Guardian of Life

In Chinese medicine, the Lungs are often called the “delicate organ,” but don’t mistake delicacy for weakness. The Lung breathes in life-giving Qi and governs the rhythm of exchange—taking in what we need, letting go of what we don’t.

The Lung also governs:

  • Wei Qi (defensive energy) – your immune shield

  • Skin and pores – the surface level of protection

  • Voice and breath – how we communicate and connect

  • Clarity and discernment – the ability to decide what to hold and what to release

The health of the Lungs also depends on proper hydration—not too much, not too little. In the dry air of fall, the Lung’s natural moisture can easily become depleted, making it more vulnerable to cough, tightness, or irritation. Herbs, teas, and foods that gently moisten the Lungs can help maintain this essential balance.

In autumn, as energy turns inward and downward, the Lung becomes especially important to support. Through gentle rituals, breath, herbal support, and movement, we can nourish the Lung and strengthen the immune system from the inside out.

☀️ Your Morning Lung Ritual: 5 Simple Practices for Daily Strength

A fall morning is the perfect time to awaken your breath and gently fortify the body. Here are five of our favorite ways to support Lung function and immunity each day.

1. 💦 Start with Warm Lemon Water or Pear Ginger Tea

Hydration is key for healthy Lung tissue, especially in fall’s dry air. Try starting your day with this soothing, Lung-supportive tea:

👊 2. Morning Chest Tapping for Immune Strength

This simple Qi Gong practice awakens the Lungs, activates the thymus (an immune-supportive gland), and encourages deep breathing. It’s similar to the “Thymus Thump” found in energy medicine—used to boost vitality and immunity through rhythmic tapping.

Chest tapping helps awaken the Lungs and activate the body's natural defenses.

How to Practice:

  • With soft fists, gently knock on the center of your chest in a steady, rhythmic motion.

  • Breathe deeply and feel your breath move through the chest as you tap.

  • Continue tapping for 30–60 seconds, then pause and rest your hands over your heart.

  • Inhale deeply 3 times, feeling your body energize and expand.

This daily practice builds a conscious connection to your breath, circulation, and vitality—and supports your immune system from within.

3. 🌿 Sip Lung Tea to Nourish and Defend

Our in-house Lung Tea is crafted with herbs traditionally used to support Lung health and immune resilience. It’s warm, comforting, and gentle enough to enjoy daily.

4. 🔘 Stimulate Lung 7 (Lieque): The Command Point of the Head & Chest

This powerful acupressure point is located just above the wrist, on the thumb side of the forearm. Known for its ability to open the Lungs, release the exterior, and support immunity, it’s also helpful for seasonal congestion and tightness in the chest.

How to Find & Use It:

  • Cross one hand over your wrist.

  • Slide your index finger just above the styloid process (the bony knob near the wrist on the thumb side).

  • Press or tap gently for 30–60 seconds while breathing deeply.

Try this before going outside or after your morning cup of tea to activate Lung Qi and protect the Wei Qi field.

5. 🌲 Step Outside and Breathe in Life

Even just a few deep breaths in the cool morning air can center your mind and awaken your body. As the season shifts, nature becomes a teacher—trees letting go of leaves, animals preparing for rest, the air itself inviting reflection and rhythm.
