small $4.80 (reg. $6)

large $8.00 (reg. $10)

What makes fenugreek so seasonally appropriate is its ability to bring balance to Vata and Kapha imbalances, of which winter is particularly heavy in. Fenugreek is a tonic and the seed of the Trigonella foenum-graecum plant, in the legume family.

In this gusty, wet weather, we highly recommend keeping fresh fenugreek among your spices. Fenugreek keeps the channels relaxed and open by nourishing the tissue and enabling a healthy flow of nutrients. This seed is WARMING, NOURISHING, and GROUNDING, with YANG energy.

Fenugreek's primary functions in Ayurveda...

Balancing for Vata (and a bit of Kapha) when used internally.

Balancing for Pitta when used externally.

BENEFITS + USES of FENUGREEK

Fenugreek promotes...

  • digestion (Steep 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in a cup of hot water for 5-10 minutes.)

  • lactation (Soak 1–2 teaspoons of seeds overnight and eat the seeds in the morning.)

  • appetite

  • healthy flow (Make a tea with a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds or sauté a tablespoon of seeds in ghee and add it to your food.)

  • healthy bowels (Soak 1–2 tablespoons of seeds overnight and eat the seeds in the morning.)

  • healthy libido (Sauté a tablespoon of seeds in ghee and take it with a glass of milk before bedtime.)

  • easing back pain discomfort (Soak 1–2 tablespoons of seeds overnight and eat the seeds in the morning or drink as a tea.)

Other uses:

  • as seasoning (Mix with ghee and add to foods as seasoning)

  • to treat diabetes or lower cholesterol (5-30 grams with each meal)

  • topically (Grind up the seed and add it to a hot bath, this will remove excess Pitta on the body.)

PRECAUTIONS:

Do NOT take if you...

  • are under the age of 2.

  • are pregnant.

  • are taking heparin, insulin, ticlopidine, or warfarin.

  • have an allergy to chickpeas.

  • run hot.

Note: taking more than 100 grams of fenugreek a day can cause intestinal distress.

“This heating yang tonic is ideal for winter use especially for those of us who might be running cold. My favorite use for this herb is well-care for Kapha and Vata constitutions, especially at meal times, and for the resolution of winter coughs, although it has many other uses. An easy way to incorporate more hu lu ba in to your winter routine is by preparing this hot infusion at bedtime. In a large thermos or Hydroflask, add 2 teaspoons fenugreek seeds and fill with boiling water. Allow to steep overnight. Sip on the hot infusion all day. Don't forget to chew the seeds. Not for use by pregnant mamas or those who run hot.” —Ileana Bourland, L.Ac.
